Job Qualification Requirements

There are no specific requirements of the formal qualification for one to qualify to be a salesman or saleswoman. 

Having a business-related course either at a diploma or degree level is a great plus point for any person seeking to be recruited as a salesman or saleswoman. 

Some business training institutions in Uganda are the African College of Commerce Kabale, Uganda Management Institute, Makerere Business Institute, Namasuba College of Commerce, Makerere University, and Makerere University Business School, among others. 

Salesmen and saleswomen can also receive on-the-job training on promoting sales in a business enterprise.

It is only important that they possess some skills and abilities and experience working as salespeople.

They must be physically energetic since they perform tasks that require a lot of physical energy. Tasks like packing, organizing and managing stock, etc, demand physical energy. 

They must possess excellent interpersonal skills. That’s because most of their duties and responsibilities involve speaking to customers, especially when taking and delivering orders. Salespeople must therefore possess all it takes to be polite for the business’s good.

Salespeople must know basic mathematics to help them avoid errors that may cause losses to the business. These workers do a lot of calculations when executing daily sales.

Salespeople must have the ability to work with minimal supervision. They should be self-driven and able to prioritize time management skills. In business, supervision is good, but it can create unnecessary pressure among the workers when it is excessively done. 

Salespeople must have the ability to work as a team. Most activities at stores such as packing boxes, placing orders in the area of delivery, stocking shelves, etc, 

require working as a team because the tasks become too many to be executed by a single person. That’s why salespeople are encouraged to work in harmony with each other for the business’s good.

They must possess excellent hand-eye coordination skills to help them skip risks of occupational hazards. While they work, they should be very vigilant of any items that may cause harm to their bodies—some merchandise like hoes, iron bars, water tanks, wire mesh, etc. 

In addition, must also possess time management skills. Activities such as processing and loading orders, packing, and shipping require a lot of commitment in terms of time management. Similarly, salespeople in the sales department must be punctual by consistently reporting to work on time.
